69. Overview of patent search

Let's continue the discussion on “Introduction to Intellectual Property and Understanding Intellectual Property”. Among them, today, we will look at “Overview of Patent Search”.

1. Necessity of Patent Information Search 

Patent information search refers to research conducted to plan R&D, improve R&D efficiency, and verify patent infringement risk based on the identification of patent contents and bibliography. 

2. Types of patent information search

1) Overview of research for new technology development: When there is a new technology to be developed, it refers to a research conducted to acquire patent information. 

2) Overview of patent existence investigation: If there is a product scheduled to be launched on the market, it is conducted to prevent patent disputes before the product is released. 

3) Overview of patent registration Possibility Study: It refers to an investigation to determine whether the technology to be investigated is a patentable technology.

4) Overview of patent invalidation: In case of patent infringement, it refers to an investigation conducted by the patent infringer for the purpose of requesting a trial for invalidation of the registered patent through prior art search.

3. Patent information search method

1) Document number search: It means a simple search focused on a specific target, and it means search for patent-related information through field search.

2) Prior art search: It refers to a patent search in a narrow sense in which about 10 to 20 related patent documents are searched for a specific technology, and a period of about 10 days is usually given. 

3) Patent map: Patent map refers to a method of researching all 200~6000 related patent documents for the technology to be investigated. If necessary, an article may also be included in the research subject, and approximately 2 to 6 months are given.
