1. Types of Patent Classifications

1) IPC CODE: International Patent Classification Code is a patent classification system that can be used worldwide. Korea accepts the IPC code as it is and uses it. IPC Code codes the field with the first alphabet (referred to as section), followed by two numbers + one letter to indicate class and sub-class. Finally, the main group and sub group are expressed by numbers again. IPC search can be first made at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, and World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO.

2) US Patent Classification (USPC): The US patent classification code is a patent classification system that has been used since 1831, before the creation of the IPC. In the U.S. patent classification, there are groups in three fields: electricity, chemistry, and machinery. There are more than 450 classes (expressed by three-digit numbers), and over 150,000 subclasses (expressed by three-digit numbers following the three-digit numbers for class).

3) European Patent Classification (ECLA): In Europe, after accepting the IPC classification, a more subdivided index is used. About 130,000 detailed classifications are created and used by adding a single letter after the IPC code.

4) Japanese Patent Classification (File Index, FI): Japan also adopted the IPC classification and further subdivided it. It is subdivided using an identifier alphabet after the IPC class (excluding I and O). Also, in Japan, there is a unique classification system called theme code and F-term. Based on the technical content, first, a theme code that is a combination of five-digit numbers and an alphabet is assigned, and then, an F-term (4-digit numbers) is given as a subordinate concept.

2. Patent search method

The Korean Intellectual Property Office provides a free search service (www.kipris.or.kr). Patents, utility models, designs, trademarks, and trials are all searchable, and all information on bibliography, abstract, full text, and administrative matters is provided. You can search by selecting the desired intellectual property at the top of the Kipris homepage, entering a keyword in the search box, and searching by category through smart search. To search for overseas intellectual property rights, select the desired intellectual property at the top of the Kipris homepage, select the desired country, and enter keywords in the search box to search. It is also possible to search by category through smart search. You can search by administrative trial (patent, opinion submission, or patent rejection) by selecting a trial at the top of the Kipris homepage and entering a search term. The operators available in the search service are AND (*, inclusive of both), OR (+, inclusive of one of the two), NOR (*!, not including the search term), NEAR (^#, when you want to find words that are separated by the number of words#), Bracket((), give priority when using more than one operator), and Phase(””, exactly matches the phrase).

3. Search for Patents and Utility Models

It can be done by selecting patents and utility models from the sub-menu at the top of the Kipris screen. Also, through smart search, it is possible to search by item and re-search within the search results, and various filtering is also possible by using the sort function. International Patent Classification (ICP) code is also included among the items, which is useful when researching specific patent-related technologies. There is a function such as basic view, drawing view, abstract view, and administrative information view, which can be useful when you are looking for specific information. Lastly, in the case of a patent that has been examined, it is possible to search for cited documents.

4. Design and Trademark Search

Click the Design or Trademark menu among the submenus of the Kipris top menu. After that, enter a basic search term to search. Setting various views, such as drawing view, abstract view, administrative disposition view, etc., and filtering through sorting will help understanding of the design or trademark.

5. Advanced Patent Search

Kipris allows you to search by grouping each item using smart search. Search items include administrative disposition (all, disclosure, rejection, registration, extinction, invalidity, withdrawal, abandonment), right classification (select patent or utility model), free search (use the same search expression as general search), search terms (synonyms, related words, translations, etc. that can be added to the search by using the extension of the search term when searching for one word in an autonomous search), IPC, CPC (a patent classification developed by the US Patent Office and the European Patent Office), application number (2 digits of classification, 4 digits of application year, 7 digits of serial number),  notice number (2 digits of registration number and 7 digits of serial number), international publication number (consisting of country code and numbers), application date (year 4 digits, month 2 digits, and day 2 digits), and other items such as search formula, abstract, claims, duration, applicant, applicant number, applicant address, research department name, research project name, etc.

Classification statistics search includes bibliographic information (name of invention, abstract, technical classification, number, date, personal information, representative drawing, etc.), administrative processing (administrative document name, receipt/shipment date, processing status, receipt/shipment number), claim, designated country (in the case of international application), prior art search literature (prior art document number researched at the time of examination), and family information (country code, country name, etc.). It is now possible to obtain all administrative processing information (examination information) for patents in five countries using the service OPD, One Portal Dossier. OPD has been applied for by consensus in five countries, Korea, the United States, Europe, China, and Japan.
