Let's continue the discussion on “Introduction to Intellectual Property and Understanding Intellectual Property”. Among them, today we will look at “how to use the Korean patent database”.
By using the patent search database (DB), you can search for patent documents in almost any country. However, there are cases where you need to directly access the DB of the country concerned because the search DB is a paid searvice or sometimes out of service. For patent search, we normally use the Korean patent search DB as most countries do not have a DB like major countries do.
1. How to use KIPRIS
KIPRIS is continuously improving its user interface. It provides an integrated search function, has excellent data reliability, and provides detailed information on Korean literature. When searching patent-related documents using the search field, the search by item is effective. In the search by item, domestic and foreign patent applications are separately classified. Search by item provides summary information of documents, abstract information, legal status and representative drawings for Korean documents as search results. In case of foreign documents, only the summary and abstract information are provided. In case of KIPRIS search, keyword search of abstract information and claims is an efficient means of search.
KIPRIS also provides integrated search. In this case, patent, utility, design, trademark, and foreign patents (USA, Japan, Europe, PCT) are searched collectively, and a re-search within the results function is provide. Only AND, OR, and NOT operators are allowed in searches. The disadvantage is that it takes a long time to search all domestic and foreign patents, designs, trademarks, etc.
KIPRIS provides a search service for US, European, Japanese and Chinese patents. Although representative drawing is not included in the search results, the drawings can be viewed by clicking on the document. Since the numbering method is different for each foreign patent document, it is necessary to understand these points in advance for efficient patent search.
2. How to use WIPS
WIPS is Korea's representative paid patent search DB and is widely used in patent offices, etc. WIPS provides a user-friendly interface by providing various search options such as re-search within the results, adjacency operator, and clustering.
WIPS provides menus of basic search, number search, field search, STEP search, and integrated search. STEP search can be performed by inserting the relevant item into each search field for each country and linking with the condition. The integrated search provides Korean and English searches. The Korean search is used to search Korean and Japanese documents, and the English search is a combination of the United States, Europe, Japan, pCT, G-Pat, INPADOC, and CN.
Today, we learned about “how to use the Korean patent database”. Next, we will discuss “patent information search using keywords”.
*I am a student learning IP, not an IP expert. Translation is also by Google translator and my insufficient English skills. I hope it will be helpful for those who do not have the relevant knowledge or who want to learn about IP.
*The above is what I learned from a book compiled by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and Korea Invention Promotion Association (published by Pakmungak) entitled “Introduction to Intellectual Property, Understanding Intellectual Property”.
