Today, we will learn about “the 4th industry and patent overview”. Among them, today we will discuss “patent search method (Kipris), sentence search, patent and utility model search”.
1. Patent search method
The Korean Intellectual Property Office provides a free search service (www.kipris.or.kr). Patents, utility models, designs, trademarks, and trials are all searchable, and all information on bibliography, abstract, full text, and administrative matters is provided. In Kipris, you can also search for international patents worldwide. The basic search method for the integrated search is based on keywords, that is, search terms. You can search by selecting the desired intellectual property at the top of the Kipris homepage, entering a keyword in the search box, and searching by category through smart search. To search for overseas intellectual property rights, select the desired intellectual property at the top of the Kipris homepage, select the desired country, and enter keywords in the search box to search. It is also possible to search by category through smart search. You can search by administrative trial (patent, opinion submission, or patent rejection) by selecting a trial at the top of the Kipris homepage and entering a search term. It is also possible to search by category through smart search. The operators available in the search service are AND (*, inclusive of both), OR (+, inclusive of one of the two), NOR (*!, not including the search term), NEAR (^#, when you want to find words that are separated by the number of words#), Bracket((), give priority when using more than one operator), and Phase(””, exactly matches the phrase). Since there is a tutorial on how to search in Kipris, it is also a good way to adapt to the Kipris site through the tutorial.
2. Sentence Search
Sentence search is a search based on the key word of each patent in Kipris. If the length of the search sentence is at least 200 characters and max. 20000 characters, Kipris searches and only the top 100 results are displayed. You can also search by item using Smart Search, and re-search within the search results is also possible.
3. Search for Patents and Utility Models Search
It can be done by selecting patents and utility models from the sub-menu at the top of the Kipris screen. Also, through smart search, it is possible to search by item and re-search within the search results, and various filtering is also possible by using the sort function within the search results. International Patent Classification (ICP) code is also included among the items, which is useful when researching specific patent-related technologies. If patent terms are difficult, you can use the patent glossary, and Kipris member users are also provided with search-type save, My Folder function, and download function. In addition, there is a function that helps you find the information you want in the search results, such as basic view, drawing view, abstract view, and administrative information view, so it can be useful when you are looking for specific information. Lastly, in the case of a patent that has been examined, it is possible to search for cited documents. This information provides documents referenced at the time of examining the applied patent. Based on this, information on similar patents or trends related to the patent technology can be identified.
Today, we looked at the 4th industry and patent overview, among them, “patent search method (Kipris), text search, patent and utility model search”. Next time, we will study “Design and Trademark Search and Overseas Patent and Trademark Search”.
*I am a student learning IP, not an IP expert. Translation is also a translator and my short English skills. This blog was created to convey the feelings I felt while learning IP. I hope it will be helpful to those who do not have the relevant knowledge, those who want to learn about IP, or those who are already learning.
*The above is what I learned from Professor Oh's lecture on the 4th industrial revolution and patents, which can be viewed through K-mooc. Here is the link to the lecture (you may not be able to view it without logging in).
