Let's continue the discussion on “Introduction to Intellectual Property and Understanding Intellectual Property”. Among them, today we will look at “Patent information search using keywords”.
1. How to write a search expression
First, select a target technology, and then capture and extract the keywords. After that, the extended keywords for each keyword are extracted, the extended keywords are listed in parallel for each keyword, and all keywords are combined with an AND combination to create a search expression. Based on the results of using this search formula, you can find the literature you want by modifying the search formula.
2. Search Operators
Since operators and rules used for each patent search database (DB) are different, it is important to familiarize yourself with the operators applied to the relevant DB. In general, free DB (KIPRIS) provides logical operators AND, OR, NOT, and syntax operators “ “ (syntax) and ^& (adjacent array), whereas paid patent search DB (WIPS) provides logical operators * (rear Cutting 1), ? (Posterior truncation 2), syntax operator adj# (adjacent order), and near# (adjacent array) in addition to those that KIPRIS provides to facilitate search.
3. Keyword Extraction Method
In the case of keyword extraction, descriptive expression, abbreviated expression, foreign word expression, morphological expression, intentional non-standard expression, and donation (?) expression should be considered in the expression method of keywords.
4. STEP Search of KIPRIS
While free search DB generally does not provide a STEP search expression; however, in KIPRIS, you can perform a STEP search using re-search within the results. To do this, you must first create a search expression. Then, enter the search formula on the KIPRIS homepage. After performing a search, check the search within the search results checkbox in the results on the right side of the screen and enter a new search expression. Two search expressions must be connected by AND, and extension keywords must be connected by OR, so () must be used. One can conduct an additional search if there are too many search results by repeating the process with a new search expression.
5. Search by item in KIPRIS
In case of KIPRIS, it is recommended to search for items through the abstract item. In the case of Korean and Japanese patents, the search formula written in Korean can be used for the abstract item, and in the case of other foreign documents, the abstract item search can be conducted using the search formula written in English.
6. WIPS STEP search
WIPS STEP search is also similar to that of KIPRIS. First, write a search formula, click Name + Summary + Representative Claim on the menu, and then enter the search formula to perform a search. After that, a new search expression is entered and the search is performed again within the results. If there are too many results, repeat the process with a new search expression.
Today, we learned about “patent information search using keywords”. Next, we will discuss “Practice of prior art research”.
*I am a student learning IP, not an IP expert. Translation is also by Google translator and my insufficient English skills. I hope it will be helpful for those who do not have the relevant knowledge or who want to learn about IP.
*The above is what I learned from a book compiled by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and Korea Invention Promotion Association (published by Pakmungak) entitled “Introduction to Intellectual Property, Understanding Intellectual Property”.
